FAQ
Q. In simple terms, what are the effects of acupuncture and moxibustion treatments?
A. When the body is stimulated by acupuncture and moxibustion, healing is stimulated and regeneration is activated by improved blood circulation and white blood cell secretion, etc. At the same time, pain substances flow more easily and analgesic substances are secreted in the brain, thus alleviating pain.
In addition, hormones and autonomic nervous system are balanced, potentially enhancing recovery and immunity.
Q. What are acupuncture and moxibustion effective for?
A. Generally, acupuncture is thought to be effective only for muscle or joint symptoms such as stiff shoulders or lower back pain、but in fact, it has been proven to be effective for a wide range of symptoms, including internal diseases.
For example, a patient initially visiting for shoulder stiffness, finds that her menstrual pain improves with treatments and becomes hopeful for infertility treatment, or blood pressure improvements have been observed during treatment for back pain. This is because Oriental medicine focuses on awakening the body's inherent healing power, not just on self-aware symptoms. Compared to Western medicine's drugs and treatment methods, it has fewer side effects to a patient and is more environmentally friendly treatment method.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes acupuncture as effective for various diseases, including:
-
Musculoskeletal disorders: Tennis elbow, cervical myofascial pain, chronic joint rheumatism, etc.
-
Gastrointestinal and respiratory diseases: Gallstones, diarrhea/constipation, bronchial asthma, etc.
-
Pain diseases: Headache, sciatica, trigeminal neuralgia, etc.
-
Circulatory diseases: Hypertension, arrhythmia, etc.
-
Urological and gynecological diseases: Dysmenorrhea, infertility, urinary incontinence, etc.
-
Other diseases: Leukopenia, obesity, depression, alcoholism, etc.
Acupuncture and moxibustion are effective for various symptoms and discomforts. Feel free to consult with us on your concerns.
Q. Are there any precautions before and after treatment?
A. We recommend not having a large meal right before visiting our clinic, as we perform abdominal diagnosis during the treatment. After treatment, since acupuncture and moxibustion improve blood circulation, we recommend a light shower instead of hot or long baths on the day of treatment. You can eat as usual, but since your body will be in a resting mode after the treatment, we advise against strenuous exercise, heavy work, or excessive drinking, and recommend relaxing instead.
Q. What kind of clothes should I wear for the treatment?
A No need for special attire; normal clothes easy to put on and take off are fine. For women wearing a bra camisole, we may ask you to take it off, but normal bras can be left putting on during treatment. If you opt for the beauty option, please note that we will remove your makeup during treatment.
Q. Can I get an infection from acupuncture?
A. We use completely sterilized disposable needles and high-temperature sterilized and disinfected needles, so there is no risk of infection.
Q. Will I get burned by moxibustion?
A. Normally, moxibustion treatments that do not directly touch the skin or are quickly removed when heat is felt do not cause burns. However, depending on your condition, we might recommend moxibustion (Tonetsu-kyu) that leaves a mark about 1 millimeter in size for a while, upon discussion with you in advance.
Q. I'm afraid of needles. Are there other treatment methods?
A. The needles we mainly use for first-time patients are 0.14mm in diameter, finer than a strand of hair, and usually painless. However, for children or those particularly sensitive to pain, we also offer treatment with non-penetrating needles. Please feel free to mention this.
Q. Is it okay to continue treatment while visiting a hospital?
A Acupuncture and moxibustion can be safely combined with medication and other treatments. Please consult the prescribing doctor about continuing your medication.
